The pattern of diagonal parallel ribs is characteristic of the twill weave, which is a form of textile weave.  It is a basic form of textile weave, along with plain weave and satin, which are the other two essential types.  The typical diagonal pattern is achieved by passing the weft thread over one or more warp threads, then under two or more warp threads, and so on, with a "step," or offset, between rows to provide the desired effect.  Because of its construction, twill has a tendency to drape well.
